I Write Comedy. So Why Am I Running for President as a Republican?

I predicted President Trump on The Simpsons. Now I’m running for President.

I know, it sounds crazy, even to me.

I’m a 61-year-old comedy writer who was always happy to leave the hard work of government to somebody else.

My thinking was pretty well summed up by the words of Homer Simpson, which I think I wrote but somebody may tell me I didn’t: “Can’t someone else do it?”

I never thought things were perfect, but the people running the country seemed serious, experienced, and well-intended — even if their values and policy choices were not identical to mine.

Then came 2016, followed by the culminating insanity of January 6th, 2020. But even that wasn’t enough to completely shake my belief that somebody else, some institutional adult in the room, would step up and get things back on track.

And then came the chaotic 2024 election cycle, the late shakeups, and the return of Donald Trump. I was beginning to lose confidence that anyone was coming to save us.

The breaking point arrived when I saw the photo from the inauguration: Trump surrounded by tech billionaires and corporate CEOs, all smiling, all falling into line.

I was disgusted into action.

I realized that the establishment wasn’t going to save us, and that simple self-respect required me to at least try to do something.

While CEOs were kneeling in submission and complicity, I declared that his presidency would end in disaster sooner than anyone expected, and they would go down with him.

I decided to use the one unique tool I had: my claim to fame as the writer of The Simpsons episode that predicted a Trump presidency twenty-six years ago.

I bought a prophet costume and publicly predicted his downfall.

It started as an expression of conviction and my deepest values, but something unexpected happened.

It felt good. In fact, it felt a whole lot better to be actively fighting to save America than sitting on the sidelines hoping someone else would do it. On top of that, millions have watched my “Prophet” videos on social media and shared their support.

Those values (a profound love of our country, a belief in our shared humanity, and a deep disgust for corruption and bullying) have led me to this moment.

I am officially running for President of the United States.

The Republicans empowered Trump.

The Democrats failed to stand up to him, and they failed to stand up for us.

I’m not leaving our future in their hands anymore.

To break this partisan logjam, I am running as a Progressive Republican in the historic tradition of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.

Restoring our democracy requires a united American people, which means we have to talk to everyone. Running in this lane gives me a way to build that broad, common-sense coalition.

And let’s be honest — the lane isn’t exactly crowded.

I’ll be sharing more about my vision for our future in coming posts.

Step one, which is a prerequisite for all that comes later, is restoring democracy.

It’s a long shot, a big swing. But my campaign is motivated by a simple desire to restore empathy, decency, and the rule of law to our political culture. It’s time to give living meaning to the Pledge of Allegiance’s dedication to liberty and justice FOR ALL
